Primary Care DVT Service - GP Care
This service is for patients living in the North of Bristol and some in Inner City and East (those in NBT catchment area) and those registered with South Gloucestershire practices
A community based Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) diagnostic and treatment service to include: finger-prick near-patient D-dimer tests at their own practice; same or next day ultrasound at a community based clinic, delivered by GP Care’s team of ultrasonographers; and community based anticoagulation for patients with confirmed DVTs.

Referrals will be accepted from appropriate primary care practitioners (i.e. GPs, practice nurses) who have undertaken the stage 1 assessment: Wells score and d-dimer assessment. Stage 1 identifies whether the patient requires further investigation in stage 2. The service will be available to patients with suspected or actual routine and non-complex DVTs of the lower limb.

High Risk Exclusions
The following patients are excluded from this Service and should be referred to secondary care:
- Age less than 18 years
- Primary diagnosis of Pulmonary embolism
- Suspected upper limb DVT:
- Housebound patients with significant manual handling implications that cannot be managed within GP Surgeries e.g. no hoisting is available, must be able to transfer with the assistance of clinic staff
- Other disease process or acutely ill patient that requires admission to secondary care
- Weigh over 165kg
