Overview - NBT

We accept referrals for adults over the age of 18 years with swallowing or communication disorders that are a result of:

  • An acquired neurological disorder/disease e.g. Parkinson’s disease, MND, Dementia, Stroke, Huntington’s Disease.
  • A medical problem e.g. COPD, Cancer.
  • Or stammer / stutter

We do not accept referrals for people with communication and swallowing difficulties that are a result of:

  • Developmental language or speech delay/disorder including dyslexia
  • Learning difficulties
  • Mental health disorders such as Schizophrenia
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Hearing impairment
  • Known oesophageal dysphagia in the absence of any indications of oro-pharyngeal dysphagia

Service Overview - UHB

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) specialise in the assessment, diagnosis and management of communication and/or oro-pharyngeal swallowing disorders.  SLT intervention aims to maximise function, independence and quality of life by providing assessment, therapy, recommendations and advice. SLTs work directly with patients, their families and carers.

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust’s Adult Speech and Language Therapy service is provided to patients in the central and south Bristol area.

For patients requiring multi-disciplinary input, please consider referral to Bristol Community Health Intermediate Care Team (ICT), or the Specialist Community Neuro Service (SCNS).

Community Speech & Language Therapy

BCH Speech & Language Team see patients who require intervention as part of the broader multi-disciplinary team (Specialist Community Neurology Service or Community Therapy Team). They see patients in their own homes.

We see all patients who have a Bristol GP.

For patients requiring uni-disciplinary SLT input only, please consider referral to the SLT outpatient services at either North Bristol Trust (NBT) or University Hospitals Bristol (UHB).

We accept referrals for adults over the age of 18 years with swallowing or communication disorders that are a result of an acquired neurological disorder/disease e.g. Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Stroke, Acquired Brain Injury, or a general medical condition, e.g. COPD, cancer.

We do not accept referrals for people with communication and swallowing difficulties that are a result of:

  • Developmental language or speech delay/disorder including dyslexia
  • Learning difficulties
  • Mental health disorders such as Schizophrenia
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Hearing impairment
  • Known oesophageal dysphagia in the absence of any indications of oro-pharyngeal dysphagia

Please refer via the Community Discharge Co-ordination Centre (CDCC) using the CDCC Referral Form

Speech & Launguage Therapy - NSCP

Offer rehabilitation, therapy and support for patients over 18 year registered with a North Somerset GP

Provision of assessment and intervention for communication and swallowing difficulties in people with acquired conditions who are housebound. The service provides for those who are unable for physical or psychological reasons to attend outpatients with other Speech & Language Therapy providers and are therefore seen within their usual place of residence.

Referral can be made using the NSCP Speech & Language referral form which is available as an EMIS template.
