Diagnosis and reporting

For information about diagnosis and reporting please see the PHE website.

There is more detailed information on diagnosis and management on the CKS website

Whooping cough is a notifiable disease and if suspected then PHE should be informed. Do not wait for confirmation of diagnosis.

Advice on testing should be obtained from PHE but as a general guide:

If cough <2 weeks duration then take a pernasal swab (all ages).

If cough >2 weeks duration and age >17 then send blood for pertussis serology.

If cough >2 weeks duration and age <17 then discuss with PHE.
