Service overview - UHB
UH Bristol provide the following pathology services:-
Pathology Day Unit
The Pathology Day Unit activity is part of the planned day care stream within the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU)
They carry out a wide spectrum of procedures, such as Dynamic Function Tests (glucose tolerance test, short synacthen test, pituitary function tests, water deprivation test), blood transfusions and iron infusions. They also offer a phlebotomy service for tests with complex sample requirements or where samples require immediate separation (e.g. Homocysteine, Gut Hormones, Renin Aldosterone Ratio).
They accept referrals from GPs.
Currently located on A413, Ambulatory Care Unit , level 4 of the Queens Building. The unit is open Monday -Friday from 08.00am until 20.00.

Histology and cytology is concerned with the diagnosis of disease from tissue and fluid samples.

Please note UH Bristol’s Children’s Hospital is unable to carry out blood tests on a drop in basis. They hold specific blood clinics for GP’s during the week by appointment only. The child’s GP needs to give the parent a blood request form and a prescription for 2 tubes of Ametop/ LMX 4/ Emla or similar and Tegaderm Film and 4 dressings. The parent needs to telephone Bristol Children’s Hospital to make an appointment. Full information is available in the leaflet to give to parents bringing children to the Paediatric Phlebotomy department.
Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre
The Perinatal Pathology service is offered through the mortuary at St Michael's Hospital.
Consultant Perinatal Pathologist: Dr Craig Platt. He can be contacted by mobile phone to answer urgent questions.

Oral and maxillofacial pathology
Bristol Dental Hospital provides a routine diagnostic oral and maxillofacial, head and neck histopathology reporting service to University Hospitals Bristol Trust in association with the Department of Histopathology, Bristol Royal Infirmary.
The oral and maxillofacial pathology department accepts referral requests from specialists, general dental practitioners and general medical practitioners.

Paediatric phlebotomy service
A Paediatric phlebotomy service is available from the Seashore Centre at Weston General Hospital from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday.GP’s must send a referral letter, in which they list which bloods are required and a brief history explaining why the bloods are required (for children under 5 years of age, this will be reviewed by the Paediatric Consultant and additional bloods may be added).The referral letter should be faxed to 01934 881374.
