Checked: 23-10-2018 by vicky.ryan Next Review: 23-10-2019

Introduction

Divarication of recti is a normal occurrence of pregnancy. Often a small divarication resolves within 6-8 weeks of delivery. Exercises can help the muscles to recover.

UHB have produced a patient information leaflet with advice on exercises

Referral for surgery is not routinely commissioned in BNSSG.

Physiotherapy

Patients can be referred to physio at UHB, NBT or WAHT by either GPs or midwives and this is normally done after the 6-8 week postpartum check.

Assessment, advice and exercises will be given.

Referral should be made to the relevant physiotherapy department clearly stating what the referral is for.

Surgical Referral - funding required

Referral for surgery is not routinely commissioned in BNSSG and is subject to an individual funding request policy and will only be funded in exceptional circumstances. Funding approval must be obtained prior to referral. See link to Divarication of Recti policy.
