HIV testing and prophylaxis treatment

HIV testing

HIV testing would normally be undertaken by the GP, particularly now when treatment is so beneficial.

Where there are delicate issues regarding HIV testing, patients can be referred to the specialist HIV team for pre test counselling.

For anonymous HIV testing contact Unity Sexual Health.

Prophylaxis

Also see Unity Sexual Health for advice on:

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEPSE)

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

Referral

The North Bristol NHS Trust HIV Service is based at Southmead Hospital Bristol.

Where patients are known to be HIV positive they should be referred to the HIV specialist nurses via email, Brecon.nurses@nhs.net.

Acutely ill HIV patients should be discussed with the HIV team or the hospital on call team for admission, contactable via switchboard.

Conditions Treated:

  • Suspected acute infection
  • Chronic infection or related to recent foreign travel.

Note this clinic is only for HIV positive patients. Patients can be triaged on the telephone and seen in clinic if appropriate or by their GP.
