Overview - NBT

We accept referrals for adults over the age of 18 years with swallowing or communication disorders that are a result of:

  • An acquired neurological disorder/disease e.g. Parkinson’s disease, MND, Dementia, Stroke, Huntington’s Disease.
  • A medical problem e.g. COPD, Cancer.
  • Or stammer / stutter

We do not accept referrals for people with communication and swallowing difficulties that are a result of:

  • Developmental language or speech delay/disorder including dyslexia
  • Learning difficulties
  • Mental health disorders such as Schizophrenia
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Hearing impairment
  • Known oesophageal dysphagia in the absence of any indications of oro-pharyngeal dysphagia

Patient choice enables patients to choose where they would like to be seen, however, it helps with effective management of patient or therapist travel time, including for home visits, if Bristol GP Practices refer based on this list: Bristol GP Practices seen by NBT SLT service

For Voice ENT, head and neck cancer and laryngectomy referrals please refer to the Bristol wide service on 0117 3421088 or e-mail SLTSTMH@UHBristol.nhs.uk We do not accept referrals if the person requires multidisciplinary team input

Service Overview - UHB

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) specialise in the assessment, diagnosis and management of communication and/or oro-pharyngeal swallowing disorders.  SLT intervention aims to maximise function, independence and quality of life by providing assessment, therapy, recommendations and advice. SLTs work directly with patients, their families and carers.

We accept referrals for adults (age 18 years and over) with swallowing or communication disorders that are a result of:
