Access to bariatric surgery

Note - Commissioning responsibility for Bariatric Surgery transferred from NHS England to the CCG on 1.4.17.

GPs cannot refer patients directly for Bariatric surgery.

Patients should be referred via the Tier 3 Weight Management Service. From there patients are assessed and referred on for bariatric surgery if appropriate.

There is a Criteria Based Access policy for Bariatric Surgery which applies to all BNSSG patients.  The policy states that patients must have completed the Tier 3 Weight Management program before onward referral can proceed. This policy is therefore for use by secondary care and GPs do not need to apply for prior approval.

Patients who are not eligible for treatment under this policy may be considered on an individual basis where their GP or consultant believes exceptional circumstances exist that warrant deviation from the rule of this policy.
